When to Re Fleece Your Western Saddle!

Do you know when it is time to replace the fleece on your western saddle? The horse knows. These images show a compressed, synthetic fleece that no longer works as intended. Horses suffer when their tack is poorly maintained and permanent damage to their back can occur. The fleece is less than a quarter inch deep in some of the images below. This is not good enough to prevent pressure points even with a half inch thick western saddle pad.

The photos below show a replacement fleece on western saddle with a natural wool fleece replacing its original synthetic fleece. See the difference! Natural fibers are essential for moisture, heat, and pressure distribution. Synthetic fleeces are cheap shortcuts to save money. Synthetic fleeces don't last as long. Synthetic fleece should not be put next to your horses back. An all natural wool fleece will evenly distribute the saddle pressure (as long as the saddle fits the horse's back) and extend the life of the saddle. The gold standard for western saddle fleece is WOOL!

If you are questioning whether your saddle needs to have the fleece replaced, it probably does. Do you horse a favor and invest in your saddle, get a second life out of it by replacing the fleece, and show your horse how much you appreciate them.

It takes about two weeks to complete the fleece replacement and have your saddle back. With ordering the fleece, repair, and reassembly the short two week turn around will have you and your horse back in the saddle quickly.
